UK HealthCare becomes one of just 63 institutions in the U.S. to be designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.
The Comprehensive Stroke Center designation is the highest honor awarded to any stroke center by the Joint Commission. This certification means UK has been recognized as a hospital with state-of-the-art infrastructure and the staff and training to treat patients with the most complex strokes. Dr. Justin Fraser, a neurosurgeon on staff says this accreditation isn’t just a reflection of UK HealthCare’s surgical expertise.
“It’s huge. It’s tremendous really. There are only a handful of hospitals throughout the country that have this designation and it’s not just the title really. It’s our ability; it gives us an ability to work with other institutions and to really become a referral center for complex cases. Not every stroke patient needs to end up at this type of institution.”
Dr. Fraser said UK Hospital has developed relationships with regional facilities to determine when cases need to be treated at the University which can provide critical care for more complex cases and that could mean the difference between life and death for countless patients.
