"I Love Mountains" Day Draws Crowd At State Capitol

Josh James

Environmental advocates gathered on the state Capitol steps Wednesday for the 9th annual “I Love Mountains” Day.

A slightly smaller crowd than in previous years braved the chilly temperatures to press lawmakers to act on several pieces of legislation ranging from the Stream-saver bill to the Clean Energy Opportunity Act.

"This is what democracy looks like," the demonstrators chanted.

Former Kentuckians for the Commonwealth chair Teri Blanton served as the keynote speaker.

"We need to stop the destruction that's happening in the mountains. We also need to address the legacy of pollution, over 100 years of mining and the messes left behind," she said.

Rally attendees marched from a spot on the Kentucky River up to the statehouse.

Speakers called on Kentucky legislators to halt mountaintop removal and promote green jobs.
