Trophy Awaits Winner of Kentucky Derby 139

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's almost six weeks until the elite 3-year-old racehorses charge down the track at Churchill Downs in this year's Kentucky Derby, but the trophy is already waiting on the winner.

Marc Forbes of New England Sterling of Massachusetts delivered the trophy to the Louisville track on Monday. He says the 14-karat gold trophy takes about 2,000 man hours to create. The company has made the winner's trophy since 1975.

Churchill Downs says work on the trophy begins in October before each year's Derby, with the target date for delivery in late March or early April.

The trophy is being taken care of by the Kentucky Derby Museum and will be shown off at several events leading up to the Derby.
