Two Months After Independence Day, Winchester to Celebrate July 4th

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A central Kentucky community is finally celebrating the 4th of July -- on the 15th of September.

Jeff Lewis with the Winchester-Clark County Parks & Recreation Department says the original Independence Day fireworks show was called off because of the drought and burn ban.

“It was tough. This is my first year as director and the last thing you want to do is come in and cancel the 4th of July. But it was something we felt like through all the information we were getting that it was smart thing to do.”

Lewis says a deposit had already been paid to Zambelli Fireworks, and the company was flexible with a new date. The show will have a patriotic theme to honor veterans.

“With 9/11 just passing us, this is another perfect opportunity for people to get out, have some fellowship, and also remember those we lost then but also those that served in all past and current conflicts.”

The fireworks will light up the Clark County sky on Saturday September 15th at Lykins Park. Cost for parking is five dollars.
