Memorial Stair Climb to Honor Firefighters Killed on 9/11

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A weekend event is planned in Lexington to honor the firefighters who rushed up the stairwells of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11.

The Fraternal Order of Firefighters is hosting a memorial stair climb Saturday at Lexington's tallest skyscraper, the Fifth-Third Bank building.

“Even the new guys that weren’t on the job that day they still show their respect and come out and do things to pass that on,” says FOF President John Durr. “It shows the sacrifice that people do every day. Those people going into those towers knew they weren’t going to come back out but they went in anyway to see what they could save.”

Participation in the stair climb is limited to 350 people: one for each of the 343 firefighters who died in the World Trade Center towers and the 7 Lexington firefighters who have died in the line of duty. Durr says each climber will carry an ID badge with the name of a fallen firefighter.

Registration is $30 for firefighters and $45 for civilians. Proceeds will benefit the firefighter monument in Lexington’s Phoenix Park.
