FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky Air National Guard is adding to its fleet of C-130 planes as part of an ongoing realignment across the Air Force.
The 123rd Airlift Wing in Louisville took delivery of a C-130 Hercules from the Tennessee Air Guard in late July and is expected to get another plane by the end of this month.
“The losing unit is changing its mission, going to tactical unmanned aerial vehicles, and we are the benefit of two of the aircraft,” says Kentucky National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Kirk Hilbrecht.
The 123rd is getting no additional funds or staff for the planes. The Kentucky unit used to have 12 C-130s in its fleet before a previous Air Force realignment several years ago. The additions from Tennessee will bring that total up to 10.
It’s not clear how long Kentucky will have the planes, but Hilbrecht says they will be put to use in missions overseas and close to home.
