14th Annual Reforest the Bluegrass Announced

LEXINGTON, Ky. - More than two acres of land at the northern part of Lexington’s Legacy Trail near Spindletop Hall and Iron Works Pike is the site of this year’s Reforest the Bluegrass.

Organizers announced details of the community tree planting event Wednesday. City arborist technician John Saylor says planting the trees will reduce overall maintenance along the trail and prevent pollution from getting into the nearby Cane Run Creek.

“Right now there are hardly any trees there at all. And we have some other overflow areas that we’ll plant if needed.”

Reforest the Bluegrass is set for the morning of Saturday, April 14th, rain or shine. Volunteers are needed to help plant a variety of tree species, including black locust, sycamores, and oak.

“We always are looking for sites that we can take out of mowing and basically get back into tree canopy. Folks that have been out to the trail and have been jogging or riding their bikes, it is a beautiful scenery as you’re out on the trail and so we’re hoping to add to that as well with the trees,” Saylor says.

Over the past 13 years Reforest the Bluegrass has planted more than 100,000 tree seedlings across Lexington. Funding for the event comes from local government and corporate sponsors. Click here for more information and to register for the event.
