Bourbon County Group Pushing Smoking Ban

By Associated Press

PARIS, Ky. – Bourbon County is one of the state's top producers of burley tobacco. But members of the Coalition for a Smoke-Free Bourbon County aren't letting that intimidate them.

Members believe they have public opinion on their side. In a recent telephone poll by the University of Kentucky Survey Research Center, 65 percent of respondents favored banning smoking in all public buildings in the county, including restaurants.

Coalition member Phyllis Robinson said the group is sending information about the danger of secondhand smoke to local fiscal court members and plans to propose an ordinance.

Earlier this year, smoke-free advocates sought a ban simultaneously from the Nicholasville City Commission, Wilmore City Council and Jessamine Fiscal Court. But the three local governments could not agree on an ordinance.
