Halloween Festivities Can Lead to Child Injuries

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Thousands of children will transform into superheroes, animals, and other creatures as they dress up for Halloween festivities.

A national organization focused on preventing childhood injuries says most parents talk about Halloween safety, but not on regular basis. Safe Kids Worldwide says a recent survey [PDF] of more than 900 parents found that only a third talk with their child each year about the potential dangers of trick or treating.

"Children have a very, very short attention span, especially this time of night, because they're so excited about going trick or treating and going from one doorway to another," says a Zinnia Robinson, a staff nurse at Kentucky Children's Hospital and Safe Kids Fayette County.

Robinson recommends that children wear costumes with some type of reflective material and that an adult accompany their child while trick or treating. Tips for drivers include turning on headlights, slowing down, and using extra caution at intersections.

In Lexington trick or treating is scheduled for Monday from 6-8 pm.
