Lexington, KY – Following a retreat and campus tour last weekend, the University of Kentucky trustees are urging UK president Eli Capilouto to adopt a plan that could dramatically alter the university's campus.

A campus-wide brainstorming session launched by President Capilouto has quickly narrowed its focus to one of improving the undergraduate experience, with an emphasis on overhauling outdated facilities.

"Yes, we've got some 19th century facilities to work on and we're going to get it done," Capilouto says.

UK Trustee C.M. Gatton told the Lexington Herald-Leader the tour of campus made it clear that the university will need abound three billion dollars, or three to four times its current construction budget, to make the necessary upgrades. A recent facility report ranked 80 percent of UK's buildings "fair to poor." Asked about the trustees' unanimous vote Sunday to move forward with a plan, Capilouto's response was just as clear.

"I'm pleased by their sense of urgency. I share it," he said.

The president has pledged to give board members an update on his progress at their next meeting on October 25th.
