RADCLIFF, Ky. – Two Kentucky residents who survived the nation's deadliest drunken driving accident more than 20 years ago want the world to know they are against a proposal to expand alcohol sales in their community.
Quinton Higgins and Ciaran Madden are planning a news conference Tuesday in the Hardin County city of Radcliff at the Carrollton Bus Crash Memorial to talk about their views ahead of an Oct. 4 special election to expand alcohol sales in the area.
The crash on May 14, 1988, killed 24 children and three adults returning to Radcliff in a church bus after a day at an amusement park.
The bus was hit head-on by Larry Mahoney, who was driving his pickup the wrong way on Interstate 71 and whose blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. Mahoney served nearly 11 years in prison.
