Lexington, KY – Surrounded by children scaling play equipment at Woodland Park, activists are gathered to raise awareness about possible untested chemicals being used in everything from milk to plastic. Beth, a mother and science enthusiast, says the issue struck home for her when her daughter, now 11, was just 18 months old.
"She started showing signs of early puberty," she says.
She points the finger at hormones in her daughter's milk, a link scientists have yet to conclusively draw. Still, she, along with about 30 other protesters, is pushing for passage of The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011.
"What we need this legislation for is to find chemicals that are not toxic and use them instead," she says.
The bill would also require the EPA to prioritize chemicals based on risk and provide broad public access to reliable chemical information.
