LEXINGTON, Ky. – A central Kentucky high school club has been named the Outstanding History Club of the year. The award was given to Henry Clay High School in Lexington by the National History Club and the History Channel.
Club sponsor Chris Snow says he wants the Henry Clay group to be proactive and hands-on.
"Right now our big project is working at the African American Cemetery Number 2. We're out there cleaning the tombstones and we finished that phase of the project. Now we are taking rubbings, photographs, and hand written records of the 1,000-plus tombstones, and then we're handing that material over to the University of Kentucky Special Collections."
The Henry Clay High School History Club has around 50 to 80 members.
Snow, who teaches U.S. History, also helped create the school's history lab. It's a collection of more than two thousand donated artifacts that teachers can use in the classroom.
Henry Clay High School will receive a plaque and be recognized in the spring newsletter of the National History Club.
