LEXINGTON, Ky. – The status of Lexington's sanitary sewer problems will be the topic of discussion at a public meeting Monday night.
Division of Water Quality Director Charles Martin says an effort is underway to establish a remedial measures plan as part of the consent decree signed with the federal EPA.
"We don't put a roof on our house and expect to get 70 or 80 years out of it, we can't expect to on a sanitary sewer system as well. The fact that it's underground, out of sight, out of mind; it's been deferred for a long time."
Pipe relining, storage tanks, and complete sewer line replacement are some of the options city officials are considering as they look for ways to revamp Lexington's deteriorating sewer system.
Martin says parts of town most prone to sewer overflows during heavy rains include the West Hickman, East Hickman, and Wolf Run watersheds.
He adds that all Lexington residents and businesses will be affected by the sewer system overhaul at some point over the next several years.
