Symposium Questions Art Ownership

By Alan Lytle

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Gaines Center for the Humanities at the University of Kentucky kicks off a week-long series of events Monday examining the ownership of art and other cultural property. Center director Robert Rabel says the Bale Boone Symposium is assembled around a central theme.

"This symposium really springs from the current interest in what is intellectual property? Who owns antiquity? Who properly owns artifacts that you find in museums? All of these questions have become much more pertinent today because of the Internet."

Rabel says the Gaines Center will host a number of nationally renowned speakers who will give divergent views on the issues raised. All events are free and open to the public. Click here for a complete schedule [PDF].
