This week DeBraun profiles local blues guitarist Tee Dee Young.

For the last 17 years, Lexington has been home to a well kept secret. On the corner of Second street and Elm Tree Lane is place called The Bluegrass Progressive Club but it is better known simply as Tee Dee’s.

Lexington Native and guitarist Tee Dee Young has owned the building for 30 years, but for the last 17 years his band has played the blues every Monday night to a packed house. Young credits those who come to sing and play for keeping the place vibrant.

“When we first started off doing the Monday night, there were several people that could actually sing and they would come up every week and we would bring em up and let them sing and we’ve been doing that ever since we started. I usually play the first set and kinda, I warm it up for the true artists see, see we’re not the true artists it’s the people who come up and sing and play who are the true artists.”

Playing every Monday in Lexington is not all that keeps the guitar slinger pre-occupied; Young is busy playing on the road and recording as well. His new album Still Pushing The Blues was released earlier last week and Young has another album, Born With The Blues with a release date to be determined.

Tee Dee Young is a true veteran of music and wants to continue a tradition that passed down to him, being the blues. His advice to the next generation of musicians; look to the past before looking ahead.

“Our past of old music, the ones that set the way, the ones that’s gone and left us, pick em up, go back and pick em up, that’s your future, that is your future for the music. If you don’t go back, some of the music out there is not gonna make any sense.”

Tee Dee Young’s album Still Pushing The Blues is available in stores and on iTunes and Amazon.

Tee Dee plays every Monday at Tee Dee’s on the corner of Second Street and Elm Tree Lane.
