Teams To 'Battle In The Saddle' In Horsepark Foundation Fundraiser

The Fourth Annual Battle in the Saddle takes place this Friday evening at the Kentucky Horse Park, and if you’ve ever wondered how some of our local celebrities might fare on horseback, here’s your chance to find out. Our own Samantha Lederman attended the rehearsal to bring us this report.

Team Penning is all about separating a certain number of cattle from the herd into a pen in the fastest time possible, so, as Hall of Famer Chris McCarron will tell you,  experience on the racetrack isn’t necessarily an advantage.

McCarron has won twice before and isn’t letting retirement soften his ambition to win again.

Competing against McCarron will be a mixture of other jockeys and trainers as well as teams from local horse farms and vet clinics and the mounted police, also local tv personalities, and former first lady Jane Beshear amongst many others.

All proceeds go towards the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation. General Admission is $10, kids under 12 get in free, including pony rides, roping, cash bar and concessions, and a live band and dancing in the dirt in the arena after the competition. The fun starts at 5pm with the Team Penning due to begin at 7:30pm Friday.

Listeners might remember Lederman and her English accent from when she was a morning news anchor on WUKY from 1999 to 2001.
