The Goat Project - Vaughn’s Branch at Oxford Circle
“The Goat Project - Vaughn’s Branch at Oxford Circle” is a stream bank restoration project funded by a Water Quality Incentive Grant from the LFUCG’s Division of Water Quality. The stream banks of Vaughn’s Branch, a tributary of Wolf Run Creek in southwest Lexington’s Wolf Run Watershed are densely covered by the invasive bush honeysuckle plant which blocks sunlight & air from reaching stream banks and prevents beneficial native plants from growing.
An eco-friendly way to eliminate bush honeysuckle is by using Goat Browsers. The goats browse on brush, vine, leaves and bushes feasting on these preferred forms of food. They are especially fond of bush honeysuckle! A herd of 15 goats will arrive at Vaughn’s Branch at Oxford Circle on June 10th and will remain for 21 days. Before they can be released into their enclosure, volunteers will clear the area of all trash and debris. All forms of plastic, sharp object and other debris must be removed from the area for the safety of the goats.
On Saturday and Sunday, June 3 & 4, from 1 - 4pm there will be a trash clean-up of the area! Rain or Shine! We will supply garbage bags, trash pickers, and plastic gloves. Light refreshments provided.
