Dangerous 'heat dome' continues, Beshear urges caution

National Weather Service

An extreme heat warning remains in effect across Kentucky through Friday evening, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 112 degrees. Officials are urging you to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity, and use cooling centers if needed.

Scattered thunderstorms, showers, and gusty winds are also expected Friday afternoon and through the weekend.

Governor Andy Beshear and other state and local leaders are reminding people repairing damage from last week's flooding to work slowly and take frequent breaks in the dangerous heat. He added that Transportation Cabinet crews repairing damaged roads and bridges are also taking precautions as well.

"I'm telling all of our transportation employees and everybody else whose out there to take it easy, right? Have water breaks. It's ok if you need to stop," Beshear said. "Thankfully most all of our equipment has air conditioning. Our folks are handling it well and our supervisors were right there on the ground with folks that day. We preach safety inside the Transportation Cabinet every single day. I think it's truly helped to improve the work environment for our folks but also really comes into play on days like we've had."

Health officials warn that heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks and recommend drinking plenty of water, cooling the body, and seeking medical attention if symptoms worsen.
