Join us on October 29th for a Party to Celebrate WUKY’s 85th Anniversary and the 6th Annual Public Radio Music Day!
LEXINGTON, KY (October 9, 2025) – October is an exciting month for WUKY and the people of Central Kentucky. On October 17, 2025, WUKY officially turns 85 years old. WUKY is the first university-owned FM non-commercial education radio station in the nation and served as one of the initial advisors to National Public Radio (NPR) and helped shape public media to what it is today.
One could say that WUKY is Kentucky’s Flagship NPR station. WUKY was one of 90 stations that carried the inaugural broadcast of “All Thing Considered” when it debuted in 1971. WUKY continues to air many of NPR’s anchor programs, like “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered”, while offering many more of their informative and entertainment programs.
October also marks the 6th annual Public Radio Music Day. This special day of recognition is on October 29th and highlights the vital role public radio music stations play in communities across America. Local stations connect their communities, bolster musicians and music economies, especially in support of live performances, and play an essential role in preserving regional history and culture.
In celebration of both milestones, WUKY is hosting a Birthday Bash and outdoor concert with the incomparable Joslyn & The Sweet Compression on October 29th with doors opening at 5PM and the show starting at 7PM.
Bring a lawn chair! WUKY also invites everyone to come early and peruse the latest exhibit in the WUKY Gallery and enjoy a Meet and Greet with the artists: Jeff Enge, Jonathan Clark and Sarah Culbreth. Sarah Culbreth graciously designed and pottered the 85th Anniversary Mugs to commemorate WUKY’s rich history in Central Kentucky.
There will be food from Athenian Grill, beverages from West 6th Brewing and cake by Martine’s Pastries. Also, to get you ready for the Halloween, we are encouraging everyone to come dressed in your favorite era of WUKY’s existence (1940s – Present).
There will be a costume contest where the winner will receive a prize package with WUKY swag and will also get to Deejay a Rock & Roots musical show for an hour. Come dressed to impress!
The presenting sponsor for this special day is Bank of the Bluegrass.
