In 2018, Exantus was sentenced to 20 years in prison but was released early last week. He was found guilty but mentally ill for stabbing Logan Tipton's family members, but not guilty by reason of insanity for Logan's murder.
Representative Roberts says, "A program that would allow a violent killer to re-enter our streets should not exist, and I plan to file legislation this upcoming session to abolish the program." Roberts also said he'll introduce legislation to prevent split verdicts.
On Thursday, Exantus was arrested in Florida for failing to register as a convicted felon as required by the re-entry supervision program. Officials in Florida say they are working to extradite Exantus to Kentucky.
Exantus’ release sparked national outrage and the promise of an investigation by the White House. Misinformation that circulated online blamed Kentucky’s parole board for his release, resulting in death threats to members that Kentucky State Police and the FBI are now investigating. However, the parole board voted unanimously to keep Exantus behind bars for the entirety of his sentence, and it was a state law that required his release.
