Three people have been arrested after police say they opened fire, injuring a Lexington police detective.

27-year-old Daquis Sharp, 19-year-old Jatiece Parks, and 19-year-old Zalan Dulin are charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, assault, criminal mischief, and six counts of wanton endangerment. Sharp is facing an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

It happened just before midnight on Royal Avenue off Winchester Road. The three allegedly fired at an unmarked police car, hitting a detective who returned fire. That officer suffered minor injuries.

Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers called it an ambush situation.

“It was scary. But I think everybody needs to know that the people that we have working for this police department strive very hard to maintain the standards that we set.” An emotional Weathers went on to say, “I’m very proud and very impressed with how each and every officer, our E 9-1-1 handled this situation.”

Kentucky State Police are investigating, and the department will conduct an internal review. Footage was obtained from body-worn cameras. The detective will be placed on administrative assignment which is protocol during an investigation.

No other injuries were reported.
