The Georgetown City Council voted unanimously to extend the city’s data center moratorium through June 30, 2027, giving officials more time to consider restrictions and a potential ban on hyperscale facilities.
Councilwoman Karen Tingle Sames said the city lacks the resources to support a data center.
Mayor Burney Jenkins said the extension would allow the council and the Planning and Zoning Commission to develop regulations if a proposed ban is unsuccessful.
Council member and mayoral candidate Kim Menke also supported the moratorium, saying the city needs standards to evaluate data centers’ infrastructure needs, benefits and potential impacts before deciding whether they are appropriate for Georgetown.
