Electric, natural gas affordability under scrutiny by Public Service Commission

The Kentucky Public Service Commission, which oversees utilities in the state, is launching an investigation into the affordability of electricity and natural gas.
With utility costs on the rise, the commission says a broad examination of the issue is needed to evaluate how it should proceed. According to the Energy Information Administration, electricity costs in the state increased by nearly 22 percent between 2020 and 2025.
The PCS is inviting the public and stakeholders to identify and discuss specific concerns and ways the state might improve bills for ratepayers.
The commission then plans to convene a technical conference in 2027 dedicated to the issue. Suggestions for topics should be submitted before September 30.
The PSC regulates more than 1,100 gas, water, sewer, electric, and telecommunications utilities operating in Kentucky.
