More than a century ago, Kentucky native Katherine Jackson French’s research kick-started a resurgence of Appalachian music that continues to this day, but her collection of traditional Kentucky ballads, which should have been her crowning scholarly achievement, never saw print. Liza DiSavino, an assistant professor of music at Berea College, has uncovered the story of why. It’s an intriguing tale of academic rivalries, gender prejudice and broken promises.
