Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that he will seek immunity from prosecution in corruption cases he's facing. "I will come to court and quash all the ridiculous libels against me," Netanyahu said, according to the Jerusalem Post . "The immunity law is intended to protect elected officials from manufactured cases, and guarantee that those elected by the people can serve the people according to their will and not the will of the legal officials." Netanyahu made the announcement in a televised speech. In the past, he signaled that he would not need to seek immunity from parliament, saying the charges against him — made official last month — were politically motivated and wouldn't hold up. Netanyahu is accused of offering favors to media moguls and of getting expensive gifts and positive press in return, NPR's Daniel Estrin and Merrit Kennedy have reported . The most serious case involves allegations of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. In what has become

With the new year come many new state laws across the country. There are the usual suspects: gun laws, marijuana legalization and housing protections, but there are also some new frontiers — groundbreaking laws concerning Internet user privacy and the classification of contract workers in California, for example. Here are some of the most notable laws taking effect Jan 1, 2020, in no particular order: Red flag Colorado, Hawaii and Nevada are the latest states to implement a red flag law, allowing a judge to temporarily remove somebody's firearms if they're a danger to themselves or others. In Colorado, some sheriffs have railed against the law . Various counties have passed resolutions referring to themselves as "Second Amendment sanctuaries," and are refusing to enforce the law . Contract worker protections California's new law, AB5, attempts to provide greater protection for contract and gig economy workers in the state by aiming to reclassify them as employees, meaning companies

An enormous number of tumbleweeds blew onto a road in eastern Washington state on New Year's Eve, piling up into a mountain of tangled branches that blocked traffic and even buried some cars, trapping travelers inside. "In the 20 years that I have worked here, I have never seen it as bad as this," says Washington State Patrol trooper Chris Thorson . "I've never seen six to eight cars, including a semi-truck, actually stopped and trapped on a highway because of tumbleweeds." "They were trapped for hours on end. We had state troopers and department of transportation employees out there helping them all night long. It eventually took ten hours to clear those cars and open up the highway," says Thorson. "We're talking 12 to 15 feet high of stacked tumbleweeds." He says snowplows picked up dozens of tumbleweeds at a time, and pushed them to a clear, wide-open area so that high winds could pick them back up and whisk them away. Fortunately, no one was injured and there were no medical

California can now begin enforcing new minimum standards for light bulb efficiency, a federal judge ruled Tuesday. It's the latest split between the state and the Trump administration, which has moved to reverse the same standards on a national level. The judge rejected a petition for a temporary block by two industry groups, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association and the American Lighting Association . The ALA says it's "conferring with counsel on next steps." The standards were adopted by the California Energy Commission (CEC) after the Trump administration recently moved to roll them back . The light bulb efficiency standards originally passed under President George W. Bush, then were expanded during the Obama administration. That expanded version includes specialty light bulbs like those used in bathroom vanities and recessed lighting, as well as candle-shaped lights. The Obama-era rule aimed to phase out all incandescent and halogen bulbs, and replace them with LED

Wildfires are a regular occurrence in Australia, but on New Year's Eve, residents of the state of New South Wales experienced blazes stronger and more destructive than they had in years . In several of the southeastern towns, smoke blocked out the sky, houses were destroyed, and thousands of tourists and locals were forced to flee to nearby beaches. Seven people have died so far, and several others are unaccounted for. It's still unclear how long the fires will last or what the extent of the damage will be. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service, made up of 74,000 volunteers, predicts that conditions will remain unsafe through the weekend . But that doesn't mean things will clear up anytime soon; fire season in Australia's southeast, where it's currently summer, lasts for months. The most recent fires are coming after weeks of strong winds, record-breaking heat and years of drought in parts of the country . Images from the fires capture sparks flying, ravaged buildings, smoke and

Updated at 1:08 p.m. ET After keeping the world waiting and watching, first for a "Christmas present" to the U.S., and then for a New Year's shift to a harder line on nuclear negotiations, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un delivered neither. Some analysts believe a key reason behind his calculations may be President Trump's prospects for surviving an impeachment process and possibly winning a second term in the White House. "Donald Trump happens to be the first sitting U.S. president to view North Korea as a source of political victory, for domestic purposes," says Go Myong-hyun, a research fellow and expert on North Korea at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, a Seoul-based think tank. Pyongyang has said it has no intention of handing President Trump any victories on denuclearization, but officials see Trump's eagerness to tout achievements to his domestic audience as a source of leverage. In remarks carried by state media, Kim on Tuesday had plenty of tough words for the U.S. as he

The baby girl cooing in a hospital in the Pakistani capital was long awaited. Her mother, Ambreen Saddam, 28, had been trying to conceive for four years. She gave birth at 9 a.m., Islamabad time, Jan. 1, 2020. That date made the birth even sweeter, says Saddam. "It's a very happy time for us," she says, lying beside her tiny, five-pound baby, who was wrapped in a bright pink blanket in a crammed maternity ward at a sprawling health compound in the city. In some ways, the world is also celebrating with her. UNICEF, the United Nations children's agency, estimates that some 400,000 babies will be born on New Year's Day — "an auspicious day for childbirth around the world," it said in a press release . UNICEF says the Pacific island nation of Fiji will most likely have delivered 2020's first baby – and it's expected to have 39 births on Jan. 1. The United States will deliver the last baby of New Year's Day, where women are expected to welcome 10,452 babies into the world. The births also
