Jerry Hale played basketball at the University of Kentucky from 1971-75, an era of transition for the program. In the final year that freshmen were not eligible for varsity play, he was part of an undefeated freshman team known as the "Super Kittens," when large crowds would show up at Memorial Coliseum hours before the varsity game in order to see the freshmen in action. Following Adolph Rupp's retirement, Jerry played on Coach Joe Hall's first varsity team in 1972-73 and on a national runner-up team in 1975, his senior season.
Before coming to UK, Hale led Floyd Central High School in Indiana to the state finals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in a Hoosiers-type story. In this conversation, he talks about that memorable freshman season, playing for Joe Hall, his class of '75 teammates and their long-term friendships, and also looks back at the Floyd Central team, which was known affectionately as the "Superhicks."
