WUKY SportsPage Episode 42: UK Softball's Autumn Humes

UK Athletics

Autumn Humes just completed an outstanding career, on and off the field, with the University of Kentucky softball program, and she recently took a few minutes to reflect on both her high school and college athletic experiences with host Keith Elkins.

Autumn had 22 wins in 2021, only the second pitcher to reach that number in a single season (Kelsey Nunley did it in 2013 and 2014). Humes is in the UK career top 10 in several categories, including wins, innings pitched, games started, ERA and strikeouts.  During her career, the Wildcats reached the Super Regionals in 2018, 2019 and 2021 (no tournament in 2020).

Humes led the softball team at Bald Knob, Arkansas High School to three consecutive state championships.  The first of those titles was the first state championship for the school in any sport.  For her four-year high school career, her earned run average was 0.70. She had a 33-3 mark in her freshman season at Harding University in Arkansas, after which she was named Division II National Freshman of the Year.  A transfer to Kentucky followed, as did a stellar career at UK, where she pitched a no-hitter in her first Division I start. Her off-the-field honors are numerous as well. She won the UK Athletics Community Service Award and was named to the Frank G. Ham Society of Character, which recognizes academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, career preparation and serving as a role model.

In this interview, she talked about her early interest in softball, how both of her parents had a part in her development as a player, some of the highlights of her UK career, and more.
