Team Offers Gift After Racially Insensitive Act

After officials said students' actions at a football game in Kentucky were racially insensitive, their volleyball team has offered a token of friendship as the two high schools competed again.

Ballard High School's volleyball players gave yellow roses to their opponents from Louisville Central High School. The gesture Tuesday night was in response to Ballard students passing a watermelon around in the crowd when the schools played Friday night.

County schools spokeswoman Renee Murphy says Ballard's volleyball team discussed what happened last week and wanted to display a sign of respect when they played Central.

Central tweeted that Ballard's move was "great sportsmanship."

Schools data show Central's student body was 77 percent black and 8 percent white last year. Ballard's was 33 percent black and 55 percent white.
