McConnell 'Can't Imagine' Scenario Where Senate Ousts Trump

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell isn’t anticipating an impeachment trial in his chamber until next year, but the Republican majority leader says he still can't envision a scenario where the Senate would remove President Donald Trump from office.

McConnell told WLKY during a stop in Louisville that he expects the Democratic-led House to continue hearings through the end of 2019.

"It looks to me like the House is going to be on this until Christmas. Then it comes over to the Senate. It displaces all other business. The chief justice of the United States is in the chair. Senators are not allowed to speak. They have to sit there and listen and I'm not sure how long it will go on," McConnell told reporters.

If the House votes to impeach, the GOP leader has indicated he plans to conduct the Senate trial six days a week – a move that could prevent high-profile Democratic candidates for president including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders from visiting Iowa in the days leading up to the state’s influential primary.

“I can’t imagine a scenario under which President Trump would be removed from office with 67 votes in the Senate," the powerful Republican said Monday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not said whether she expects the inquiry to last through December.
