LRC Case A New Political Football In Governor's Race

Legislative Research Commission

The Republican candidate for governor is hoping to saddle Democrats with the blame for the recent six-figure settlement reached between the Legislative Research Commission and former staffers who accused a lawmaker of sexual harassment.

In a warm-up speech before Fancy Farm covered by cn|2, GOP gubernatorial hopeful Matt Bevin tied the lawsuits and resulting settlement to his opponent’s party.

"Look at the recent settlement where you the taxpayers had to pay $400,000... to sweep under the rug the type of shenanigans being perpetrated by and covered up by Democrats in Frankfort," he said.

Aides Cassaundra Cooper and Yolanda Costner accused Democratic Rep. John Arnold of sexual harassment and the commission of covering up a pattern of inappropriate behavior. Democratic nominee Jack Conway told cn|2 the matter goes beyond one party "because the whole scandal was handled by the LRC, which is a combination of Democrats and Republicans."

Conway’s running mate, Rep. Sannie Overly, was called to make a deposition in the case, but the Democratic Attorney General says he has purposely avoided discussing the case with her.
