Kentucky is already seeing the fallout from the state Supreme Court’s weekend ruling affecting Gov. Andy Beshear’s ability to issue pandemic-related mandates. According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Democrat has canceled his latest school masking order. But kids shouldn’t take off those facial coverings just yet.
The high court order was a win for the Republican-led legislature, which passed laws demanding greater input in statewide emergency orders. With the unanimous ruling, those laws are in effect – leading the governor to roll back his 30-day mask order in schools.
But a separate mask order implemented by the Kentucky Board of Education appears unaffected for now. And the Kentucky School Boards Association is urging education stakeholders to take a slow approach in responding to the Supreme Court decision.
Beshear has argued school districts that brought students back without masks put kids and staff at greater risk of illness or quarantine.
The governor is set to address the new ruling and state's COVID-19 numbers at 4 p.m. Monday.
