Kentucky Senate passes ban on older transgender athletes

Karyn Czar

A bill that prohibits transgender females from playing on girls’ middle and high school sports teams has passed the Senate and heads to the House. WUKY’s Karyn Czar reports from Frankfort.

That was the chant that resounded through the Kentucky State Capitol during the annual Fairness Rally on Wednesday. Inside the Senate Chamber, lawmakers were debating Senate Bill 83. The Save Women’s Sports Act which directs the Kentucky High School Athletic Association to pass regulations banning those who are identified as males on their birth certificate from participating on girls’ sports teams. When the bill was in committee, eight-year-old Cedar pleaded with lawmakers to vote against it.

High School Senior athlete Hallie Bradley is a member of the swim team and an avid ice-skater. She spoke out earlier this week in support of the bill.

SB 83 passed 27-8 and heads to the House. Similar legislation has faced legal challenges in other states and if SB 83 and the similar HB 23 pass as expected, those who oppose the bills say lawsuits will follow.
