KY National Guard deployed to Florida

Associated Press

The Kentucky National Guard is in Florida helping with recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Debby.
Florida officials reached out for assistance since the storm swept across the state earlier this week.

Governor Andy Beshear says Kentucky is the only state providing additional air support with helicopters and hoists.

“So that if we’re called upon to do the same thing that our National Guard and West Virginia’s and Tennessee’s did after the floods, we’re there to help Florida.”

National Guard Units from Florida were some of the first to respond to Kentucky’s call for help when historic flooding ravaged Eastern Kentucky two years ago.

“They had some of their best units in our Emergency Operation Center. Folks that had dealt with hurricanes and others and they stayed months to help us so I’m proud that we can pay that back just a little bit.” Beshear added, “And to the people of Florida and Georgia and South Carolina, we know what floodwaters mean and what they can bring and we’re praying for all of you.”

Debby was a category one Hurricane when it first hit Florida and then downgraded to a tropical storm which continues to send a deluge along the Eastern Seaboard.
