Large sporting events like the Kentucky Derby bring fans and an influx of money to the area. They also bring human trafficking. WUKY’s Karyn Czar reports.

According to the Family and Children’s Center, the Kentucky Derby is the second largest event for human trafficking in our country. Governor Andy Beshear is reminding you to stay vigilant this Derby weekend.

"Be on the lookout. We don't want what is our big weekend to show everything great about us to the world marred. Are people being hurt? And taking advantage of and and and abused in terrible ways," said Governor Andy Beshear

So what should you look for?

"The experts are saying there isn't any one specific sign but, but here's what you need to do. If you see something that is off and you can feel that it's off. And and when you're looking at it, you know that something's wrong. Make a call. If everything's OK, then no worries. But not making the call might be the difference. And someone's continuing to be abused on a daily basis. And then finding safety."

That number to call is 888-373-78-88. According to KY.gov, the state’s official site, the National Human Trafficking Hotline has received more than 3,800 contacts related to Kentucky since 2007. There was a 67 percent increase in reports and 71 percent increase in victims in 2022 compared to 2020. But The Cabinet for Health and Family Services reports a glimmer of good news. Kentucky saw a 10% decrease in contacts in 2023. Again the National Human Trafficking Hotline Number is 888-373-7888.
