A newly-hired consultant will be looking into complaints about air quality related to the city’s wastewater treatment plants and collection system.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton signed an emergency $75,000 contract Monday with Webster Environmental Associates, out of Louisville, to assist city workers in addressing the complaints.

Gorton said the escalating air quality concerns – originating from Leestown Road near the Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant – require “an aggressive response” outside of typical procurement policies.

The job: Locate the source of the unpleasant smells, check for air leaks, examine filters, and conduct testing if necessary. Then, identify needed improvements and aid in creating a “broad, proactive” approach to odor control.

The city says several potential factors may be playing a role, including lack of rainfall.
