Officials have narrowed their sights to seven potential areas for expansion around Mint Lane and Man O War, Royster Road near Winchester Road, and a few areas near Athens-Boonesboro.
Jillian Riseman with CivicLex says residents will soon get a look at the ways Lexington might grow.
"They're moving forward with drafting a map to present to the public next week," she says. "There will be a public input session for people to provide feedback to the committee on what they think about these areas for expansion."
That meeting will be held on September 12 at 6 p.m. at the government center.
The process moves ahead despite calls by opponents, including the Fayette Alliance, to halt the effort through a temporary injunction. In a recent motion, the group urged a Fayette Circuit judge to stop the Urban Growth Management Advisory Committee’s work, arguing in part that the expansion was not supported by the Planning Commission.
"The Committee has been given approximately 6 weeks to make a recommendation to the Planning Commission that will impact our community for decades," Fayette Alliance Executive Director Brittany Roethemeier said in a statement. "We appreciate the time and consideration that Judge VanMeter is giving this motion, and we look forward to hearing her ruling on October 5, 2023."
