'Historic opportunity': New Lexington middle school could be named after state's first female African-American doctor

FCPS

Fayette School Board members have been given a preliminary recommendation for naming a new middle school under construction on Polo Club Boulevard.

The naming process is far from finalized, but school leaders now have a name under consideration: Mary E. Britton Middle School.

Bill Bradford, chief school leadership officer, called the choice a "historic opportunity" and gave a brief description of Britton, who was an American physician, educator, suffragist, journalist, and civil rights advocate.

"She was a public school teacher and activist. She later earned a medical degree and became the first female African-American doctor in the state of Kentucky and she practiced locally here in Lexington," Bradford explained.

The recommendation comes after a lengthy process of gathering input and, under the timeline suggested by Bradford, could be voted on as early as September 11.

The Polo Club middle school is projected to open in fall of 2025.
