CivicLex Chat: Lexington expansion zeroes in on seven areas, new real-time intelligence center online

Planning staff have presented 15 sections of land that could be roped in to the city’s urban service boundary expansion.

The sections of land put before the Urban Growth Management Plan Advisory Committee last week fall in the rural service area, but could be considered for inclusion in the urban service boundary.

Jillian Riseman with CivicLex says the idea is to begin narrowing down the possibilities for where an expansion might make the most sense.

"They met last week to look at a couple of different specific areas the planning staff and water quality staff had recommended for consideration," Riseman says.

Planning staff scored each of the sections based on a number of factors from size to the cost of running sewer and utilities out to those areas.

The committee ultimately zeroed in on 7 of the 15 sections of land, asking for more detailed maps. Those include areas off of Mint Lane, Man O War, Royster Road, Athens-Boonesboro, Boonesboro Manor, Canebrake, and Blue Sky.

The discussions continue as opponents of the expansion are working to gather signatures amid efforts to challenge the expansion process in court.
