Battle over abortion legislation heats up in Frankfort

The room was packed as lawmakers heard from pro-choice and anti-abortion groups in House Standing Committee meeting Tuesday to vote on HB 3 which requires abortion providers to make a “reasonable attempt” to reach both parents of a minor seeking an abortion, currently only one is required. The bill also creates new standards for judges who sign off on procedures for minors and sets stricter standards for women to get an abortion medication that they can take at home. Republican Representation Nancy Tate sponsored the Humanity and Welfare Act.

Democrat Representative Pamela Stevenson voted against the bill who says in no other area do lawmakers interfere with a doctor/patient relationship and tell them how to make medical decisions.

The bill passed through Committee and heads to the House floor.
