Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit died Monday morning after a training session on the track at Santa Anita. Medina Spirit’s Kentucky Derby win was in jeopardy after a drug test came back positive after the race. Trainer Bob Baffert argued that the steroid betamethasone was not injected but instead got into the colt’s system from a topical ointment used to treat a skin condition. A follow-up urine test confirmed Baffert’s claims. Early indications are that the horse suffered a heart attack after his morning workout.
