On the 100-year anniversary of the entombment of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, a ceremony was held Thursday morning at Veteran’s Park in Lexington. Arlo Barnette reports.
Veterans Day observance this year sees events around the country honoring the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, the final resting place for a World War I service member since November 11th, 1921. It stands as a people’s memorial that inspires reflection on service, valor, sacrifice, and mourning.
WKYT-TV reports some in the Lexington community participated by dedicating a “Never Forget Garden.” Vets and their families, the Kentucky and Transylvania chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Veterans Park Elementary chorus, Councilmember Susan Lamb, Brigadier General Benjamin Adams, and Mayor Linda Gorton were on hand. So was Congressman Andy Barr:
“I’m continually humbled at the sacrifices our veterans have made for our country. One day is not enough to honor all of the weeks and months our servicemembers have spent away from their families defending the freedom we get to enjoy. We have the privilege to live in the greatest country in the world and in no small part that is due to our veterans and, especially, to those today that are veterans of Afghanistan.”
City-sponsored events for veterans started November 5th and included veterans’ claims assistance, the Lexington VA Health Care System providing flu shots and COVID-19 vaccinations, and a Women Veterans Appreciation Gala at the downtown Hilton. The National Association for Black Veterans held a memorial Thursday morning at Cove Haven Cemetery.
Lexington will conclude its “Week of Valor” for veterans with a dinner honoring World War II, Korean, and Vietnam vets 6pm Friday at the Lyric Theatre.
