It remains a waiting game for those watching a Kentucky House committee's deliberations on impeachment petitions against Gov. Andy Beshear and Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
"I want to report what we did in the executive session. We discussed all three petitions and reached no final resolution. We will now be adjourned until the chair of the chair."
Impeachment Committee Chair Jason Nemes made that brief announcement after another lengthy closed door session Monday. While the panel — made up of four Republicans and three Democrats — has dismissed two of the petitions calling for the governor's ouster, the prolonged discussion signals a willingness to keep the action on the table.
In his daily briefing, Gov. Beshear said by doing so the lawmakers are empowering those who have made threats against him.
"It's a bad precedent," he said. "I hope that not only do they toss them out but say we're not going down this road in the future."
The petition points to Beshear's far reaching virus-related executive orders as grounds to impeach, a charge the governor says is without merit. Another petition seeks the removal of Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron over his handling of the Breonna Taylor case.
