Fayette County Public Schools End Targeted Services For Students Until 2021

Associated Press

Tutoring and limited in-class learning for some four thousand students in Fayette County who were identified as needing additional help or struggling with on-line learning will pause on Friday, November 20th.

A press release issued Thursday night said in part: "Looking ahead, we recognize that Thanksgiving is one of the biggest family holidays of the year," said LFCPS Superintendent Manny Caulk. "We have to anticipate the likelihood that families will travel or gather and unfortunately, we know those activities could drive community spread. Ideally, we would want to pause targeted services for 14 days after Thanksgiving break to mitigate the risk and give people time to quarantine after potential exposure."

Fayette County is currently listed as a red zone, which means transmissions of the Coronavirus are high and stricter guidelines are recommended, including virtual learning. All Fayette County Public School students will continue with NTI :2DL until winter break and some limited special education services may also continue.

When the spring semester begins in January, the districts will allow families to choose between in-person and on-line instruction. The press released added that if the county's incidence rates "are in the red as we get closer to January, then in-person learning could start as NTI: 2DL until cases decrease. In that case, FCPS could offer targeted services again, since that is allowed for communities in the red. If Fayette County is green, yellow, or orange, we will be back in school."
