How Much Do You Really Know About Mrs. Lincoln?

Library of Congress

The Mary Todd Lincoln House will celebrate Mrs. Lincoln’s 197th birthday this Sunday with a themed tour titled Mrs. Lincoln’s Favorite Things. This light-hearted, guided tour explores her varied tastes-- from fashion to French. Light refreshments, including her famous white cake, will complete the tour.  Tours will take place at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. Sunday.

Mrs. Lincoln’s Favorite Things is a part of the museum’s themed tour series. While the standard tour covers Mary Lincoln's entire biography, themed tours take a closer look at special topics related to Mrs. Lincoln and her life. Tours are also limited to no more than 15 people per tour. “The themed tours provide the opportunity for a very personal experience,” says director Gwen Thompson. “Each tour group essentially has the house to themselves with their guide.” Themed tours are offered on a rotating basis and include Mrs. Lincoln and Mrs. Keckley, Mrs. Lincoln’s Civil War, and Death, Mourning, and Mrs. Lincoln.

Admission $15 for individuals, $13 per person with a group of four or more, and $10 per person for members and their guests. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Space is limited. To purchase tickets, visit www.mrslincoln.eventbrite.com or call Gwen at 859-233-9999. The Mary Todd Lincoln House is located at 578 West Main Street in downtown Lexington. Free parking is directly behind the house.

The Mary Todd Lincoln House is the girlhood home of Mrs. Lincoln. She brought her husband and children to visit the Todd family here in 1847. The first historic site restored to honor a first lady, the museum is operated by Kentucky Mansions Preservation Foundation, a private non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and promoting historic properties. Further info about the museum available at www.mtlhouse.org.
