Flu Season Arriving Fashionably Late In Kentucky

AP

Kentucky residents have enjoyed a reprieve from flu season this year, with the state lab having confirmed only two cases so far in the Commonwealth.

The “Get Your Flu Shot Here!” signs are ubiquitous at clinics and pharmacies around town, but you’d be forgiven for forgetting that it’s flu season.

"This is actually late in terms of getting the first confirmed cases," says Kevin Hall with the Fayette County Health Department. "The last few years we've been seeing those in August or September, so now that we're almost into November to still not have any confirmed cases in Lexington... I don't want anybody to think that that means we're out of the woods just yet. The peak season in Kentucky isn't until January and February, so there's still plenty of time for the flu to hit. This is the ideal time to get that flu shot."

And a reminder – Hall says the full flu immunity doesn’t kick in until about two weeks after patients receive the vaccination.

A free flu shot clinic will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. this Thursday at Consolidated Baptist Church on Russell Cave Road. No appointment necessary.
