Medal Awarded Posthumously To Slain State Police Trooper

Kentucky State Police

A Kentucky State Police trooper killed in the line of duty has been honored with the Governor's Medal of Valor nearly 50 years after his death.  The award was presented posthumously on Thursday to Delano G. Powell.

State Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown presented the award to Powell's widow and a niece at a ceremony in Lexington.

The Governor's Medal of Valor is the highest honor awarded to a state police officer for heroism in the line of duty.

Including Powell, 18 state police troopers have been awarded the medal since 1973.

Powell was 28 years old when he was shot and killed on July 8, 1965, while attempting to serve a warrant in Breathitt County. Powell had been a trooper for 18 months when he died.
