Council Advances Resolution Expressing Support for Forest Center

The Environmental Quality and Public Works Committee advanced a resolution Tuesday which expresses support for a forest research facility at the University of Kentucky.

The Forest Health Research and Education Center will conduct biological research on tree resistance to threats such as blight, social research on the effects of forest loss, and educational outreach.  UK Forestry Chair Terrell Baker says the Center already has over $800,000 in support from UK, the US Forest Service, and private gifts, but hopes that a statement of support from the council and other groups can elicit additional aid.

“That will enable us not only to provide permanent funding for the center but also help us increase our impact and effectiveness,” he said.

Having passed out of committee, the measure will proceed to the council work session.
