Deadline Extended To Sign Up For Toy Program

Parents who otherwise would not be able to give their children presents on Christmas Day have two extra days to sign up for the Lexington Fraternal Order of Firefighters toy program.  FOF President John Durr says the group decided to extend the deadline because of bad weather at the start of the sign-up period.

Durr told WKYT TV the toy program allows parents to come shop for Christmas gifts for free.

"They're given tickets so they're able to choose the toys that are better suited for their kids," Durr said. "They're able to pretty much pick out the Christmas for their kids."

Durr said there were no objections to extending the deadline for people to apply for help.

"Black Friday's over, all the hustle and bustle is over, now they're in the Christmas mood, Thanksgiving's gone," he said. "They're able to sit down and think about it and go, 'Are we really going to make it?' And this gives them two days to sign up."

The Firefighter Toy Program provides toys to children birth to 12 years of age. Applicants need only apply, show proof of residency in Fayette County, a current and valid photo ID and birth certificates for each of the children they are enrolling in the program. Applicants will come out on "shop day" to personally select the toys for their children.

Where to apply:
1713 Jaggie Fox Way, Lexington.
(From Georgetown Rd., turn left on Sandersville Rd., turn right on Jaggie Fox, and follow the signs.)

Bring the documents mentioned above with you at time of sign up.
