The unique challenges facing aging LGBT adults seeking medical care may not be obvious to everyone, but one Lexington group wants to change that.
Senior Pride Initiative is set to hold its second conference Friday, with an aim toward exposing some of the pressures members of the LGBT community face as they get older.
"Some people when they access long-term care decide that it's safer to go back into the closet than it is to be out to the care staff in the facility," says initiative director Troy Johnson. "And while Lexington is a very progressive little town, this problem extends beyond just our city limits."
According to Johnson, roughly 70 percent of those identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender are spending the end of their lives alone.
The conference will be held from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday.
